Plato falls between Socrates and Aristotle. These three philosophers lived during the Athenian decline. This caused a great deal of turmoil in their lives and deeply influenced their philosophical views. Here is a lecture on Plato I found very enjoyable.

James: What I admire most about the ancient Greeks is the great value they place on wisdom and knowledge in developing virtue. A person must first be able to reason out that an ethical dilemma exists and how best to approach it and then act with the courage required to do the right hing.

=why just they? all all of us thirst for knowledge to gain wisdom, inspite of all the psycho-socio-econ-cultural factors prevailing from time to time.WE SURELY LEARN FROM SUCH GREAT THINKERS. but how far has the world changed over 2500 yrs because of them and their likes?

Western philosophy begins with Plato. Very few of us in the United States are trained with the epics an philosophies of India or China. I’m sure as time goes by that will be remedied.
